He wrote 104 symphonies, 54 sonatas, 31 concertos, 24 operas, and 16 masses. He is considered the father of the symphony. He was a teacher of Beethoven; he was admired by Mozart and Salieri and wrote two epic oratorios: The Seasons and The Creation. 2009 is the 200th anniversary of the death of Franz Joseph Haydn and the Chorale and St. Louis Chamber Orchestra pay tribute in this performance of his charming, St. Nicolai Mass. Also on the program is music by Mozart, Baroque choruses "not written by Bach", and music by master composers of the Renaissance.
